As presidential election goes ahead, teenagers miffed that they¡¯re left out

Young South Koreans are furious over not being able to take part in the festival of democracy with the 19th presidential election. Young people headed out to Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on election day, May 9, to demand voting rights for 18-year-olds.

They said that an election is not democratic without young people. The demonstrators also held a mock election of their own, declaring plans to continue demanding the vote for young people going ahead. Around 200 members of young people’s groups like Nada Educational Community and the Union of Teenagers for Democracy gathered at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul on the afternoon of May 9 for a demonstration to call for election voting rights for 18-year-olds, guarantees on political freedoms such as party membership and election campaigning regardless of age, and guarantees on the abolition of school rules suppressing freedoms of expression and assembly.

“What young people need are the political rights to make their opinions known - rights like the freedom to protest school rules that place restrictions on students’ bodies or the freedom to counter arguments that try to confine teenagers to the role of studying,” said Choi Ri, a 19-yearold activist with the group ASUNARO: Action for Youth Rights of Korea.

“We believe that enfranchisement of young people is what is most needed for us to claim these rights,” Choi added.

Moon Joon-hyuk, the 17-year-old chairperson of the youth participatory action group Fly High, said, “Young people today hope to be able to participate as democratic citizens. We want a society where we can state our views as sovereigns on our political convictions and social issues.”

“We want to leave behind the oppressive life of resume-building and grades and choose for ourselves the president who is going to change that life,” he added.

A mock election by teenagers was held the same day near the demonstration site. A “campaign
headquarters for young people to choose the 19th President of the Republic of Korea themselves” established by the National Council of the Young Men's Christian Association of Korea staged election events at 30 locations nationwide beginning at 6 am. The voters in the mock election were South Koreans under 19, who do not have the right to vote in actual elections. Over 60,000 people had registered for the electoral college as of the morning of May 9.

[...] The headquarters plans to pass along the election certification to the president chosen by the young voters. The National Council of YMCAs announced on May 10 that Minjoo Party candidate Moon Jae-in had won the national mock election by young voters with 20,245 out of 51,715 votes, or 39.14%. In a different outcome from the actual election, left-wing Justice Party candidate Shim Sang-jung came in a close second with 36.02% of the vote, followed by conservative Bareun Party candidate Yoo Seong-min with 10.87%, moderate People’s Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo with 9.35%, and conservative Liberty Korea Party candidate Hong Joon-pyo with 2.91%
