Happiness no longer just a personal matter, but a policy issue

“Gross domestic product no longer serves as a measure of a society’s wealth. South Koreans are ranked 11th globally GDP, and yet they report a very low level of happiness. This shows that growth no longer guarantees happiness. We should now regard happiness not as a personal issue but as a social good and consider what the government can do to make our lives better,” said Luigino Bruni, a professor at LUMSA University in Italy, during his keynote address at the opening ceremony 2016 Asia Future Forum on Nov. 23.

During the speech, Bruni declared the importance of public happiness and said that the government should act to promote happiness, which has hitherto been regarded as belonging to the private sphere.

Launched in 2010 to promote co-existence and shared prosperity in Asia and sustainable development and now in its seventh year, the Asia Future Forum is being held [...] on the theme of “Beyond GDP: The Pursuit of Happiness for All” [...].

“People have ignored the idea of measuring happiness because it’s a subjective emotion. But it is possible to objectively measure happiness through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of income, life expectancy and other relevant indices and of questions related to happiness. We’re at the point where investment from the public sector is necessary to develop and advance a happiness index,” said Nic Marks, founder and CEO of British company Happiness Works. [...] “Just as important as material abundance and individual feelings connected to happiness such as superiority or dignity are factors connected with the community and with public services such as trust of others, a sense of safety and government integrity,” he said. [...]

The opening ceremony and the forum were packed with more than 400 attendees from all walks of life, including researchers, office workers, small business owners, homemakers and students. “In a report analyzing inequality in Asia that was released in March, the International Monetary Fund found that South Korea has the highest level of inequality in Asia. While the economy has grown in size, intensifying social disparities and inequality appear to be affecting the level of people‘s happiness,” said National Assembly Chung Sye-kyun during his congratulatory address. “I hope that this forum will be an opportunity for us to move toward a happier society, a society that places more importance on people than on the growth index,” Chung added.

“Surveys show that a significant share of the anti-corporate sentiment that has been increasing recently is felt by corporate employees. These findings show that this is the time for us to break away from our current rigid corporate culture and our obsession with growth. [...]” said Park Yongmaan during his welcoming remarks. Along with being chair of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Park also chairs the Asia Future Forum Steering Committee.
